Moving ShareFile from a Handful to Hundreds of Integrations in One Fell Zap(ier)
“We worked with Left Hook Digital to integrate our Citrix ShareFile product with Zapier to create workflows that help make everyday tasks simple. Throughout the process Left Hook Digital exceeded our expectations, and the team went above and beyond to ensure they delivered the highest quality final product. They were able to quickly turn around prototypes and complete any updates as needed. Communication was excellent and the project was completed seamlessly.
We were so pleased with the quality of the service, we immediately contracted them again for another integration. I highly recommend Left Hook Digital for your integration needs.“
Citrix Product Manager
Citrix ShareFile is a leading cloud storage tool used by enterprise and business customers to store, sync, and share data securely from any device.
With 55,000 customers and 17 million users, ShareFile commands a “Top Five” market share in the data storage/syncing market for enterprise and business customers. Renowned for its security, scalability, and hands-on customer support, ShareFile grew 60% in 2015, making it the fast growing Citrix product of the year.
Integration is the new marketing. That’s why other B2B SaaS companies are so eager to plug into ShareFile’s massive customer base. As the enterprise file sync and sharing market matures, competitors like Box and Dropbox are touting their integrations as a key differentiator.
But by the fall of 2015, ShareFile had enabled only a handful of direct integrations with sister Citrix products like RightSignature and its long-time partner Microsoft. A direct integration with a peer B2B app is a wise but time-expensive investment for a SaaS, requiring a mix of business development, software development, and marketing focus. Not even a business the size of Citrix can afford even 10% of the potential integrations that their users demand.
Left Hook’s Solution
To quickly scale their integration ecosystem, ShareFile needed to get iPaaSified. Among the many different “Integration Platforms-as-a-Services (iPaaS)” on which to establish their first cloud-to-cloud presence, Zapier offered a fast path to enabling thousands of new integrations to over 500 other B2B apps.
To begin the process, Left Hook worked closely with ShareFile’s development team to understand which potential use cases were highest priority for its customers. Next we dug into ShareFile’s complex but well-documented RESTful API to understand how to best interact with Zapier’s Developer Platform, given ShareFile’s complex but highly secure OAuth 2.0 authentication method. Using Postman to perfect the desired API calls, we quickly built out an initial private Developer App, complete with a New File Trigger and several useful Actions.
We then provided ShareFile’s team a simple “how to” video to help them train an internal beta testing cohort. Their quick use of the private Developer App allowed us to perform extensive testing and continued exploration of important use cases.
With insightful, real-world feedback from this testing phase, we then worked with Citrix to activate the Developer App to Global status, a process known as “going Global.”
In addition to building the Global App, we also took on writing helpful user documentation and help information, and even drafted their internal marketing docs.
ShareFile entered the Zapier ecosystem in March 2016 ready to integrate with the web’s most important B2B apps, including QuickBooks, Dropbox, Microsoft OneDrive, Google Drive, Outlook 365, Salesforce, Gmail… and hundreds more of the 650+ apps enabled on the Zapier platform.
